Gráinne Mhaol, the Pirate Queen

Gráinne Mhaol is a legendary Irish pirate that lived in Ireland around the year 1500 . She sailed from island to island along the west coast with her fleet of ships. She raided as she went, building up a great hoard of wealth and earning her title as the Pirate Queen.  It was not common for women to be sailors at this time but Gráinne rebelled against this.  As the legend goes, Gráinne was told she could not sail because her beautiful long hair would catch in the ropes. This made her very angry, so she decided to cut off all her hair! Her father had no more excuses, so he had to let her on board. This is how she got her nickname ‘Gráinne Mhaol’; in Irish,  maol  means ‘bald’! She was also one of the last Irish leaders to defend against English rule in Ireland. Planting Herbs

4th class have planted some herbs to brighten up the classroom after taking our Christmas decorations down. The herbs we chose from were parsley, mint, chives and coriander. Here are some pictures. We will keep you updated on the growth of our herbs and how we are looking after them. \

One point perspective art

Here are some samples of our one point perspective landscapes. These were done by creating a vanishing 'dot' in the centre of our pages. From this dot we drew out to divide our A3 pages in quarters. It looked like a big X on our page. In the top quarter we drew our sky/sun/rainbow/clouds, etc. In the left quarter many of us drew trees. In the right quarter most of us drew buildings. The bottom quarter became our road or river. We then painted our pictures the following week.
