Snowstorm in a jar

Image
Fourth class had a lot of fun making snowstorms in jars this week. We learnt how oil and water do not usually mix but when you add an ingredient such as Alka Seltzers, which contain baking soda and acid, the force will make the two liquids mix for a few seconds. This created a snowstorm effect! Have a look at some of our pictures from this experiment: Pouring our glittery 'white water' into our oil. Snowstorm!!

Oh The Weather Outside is Frightful...

..But our art is so delightful! Have a look at some of our Winter/Christmas themed art. These funky reindeer were fun to make. We experimented with lots of different patterns. We had to experiment with mixing many different shades of blue to make these Winter landscape scenes! We have been exploring materials and their properties in science and therefore thought it would be a good idea to use various different fabrics to make our penguins.  Making sure each paper strip was only 1cm wide when making these Christmas trees was quite hard!

Toys - Then and Now

Image
Fourth class have really been getting into the spirit of Christmas, and have been comparing and contrasting toys from the past to the toys we play with today. We also watched clips of old episodes of the Late Late Toy Show and compared these to this year's Toy Show. Here we are playing with some older toys.

Golden Boot Winners!

Image
Fourth class have won the Golden Boot for taking the most steps in the school this week! Our favourite way to keep active here in Room 15 is to dance along to Just Dance videos on YouTube. We also like getting active homework, such as to dance along to our favourite song. We are very proud of ourselves.

Gorilla by Anthony Browne

Image
Over the past few weeks, fourth class have used the story 'Gorilla' by Anthony Browne as inspiration for drama. We really enjoyed this story and therefore we found it easy to use our imaginations to think of many more adventures that Hannah and the gorilla might have gone on other than those mentioned in the book. We then acted some of these adventures out. The theme of the story is friendship which connected well to a lot of other activities we were doing in school at the same time for Friendship Week. One of these activities was 'filling each others buckets' which we would be happy to tell you about. Here is a YouTube link of the full story if anyone would like to listen to it again at home. The words also appear on screen which means you can read along. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgaCzuFtKoI

Blue Star

Image
Hi everyone! This year we are taking part in the Blue Star SESE programme. According to their website this is " an education initiative for primary school pupils across Ireland. The idea of the Programme is simple: to foster better understanding and knowledge of the European Union and how it affects the lives of Irish citizens among primary pupils through classroom projects and activities."  Here is a link to the website for anyone who would like to take a further look:  http://www.bluestarprogramme.ie/about/ After learning some new information about Europe and the European Union, we split into groups and researched and prepared projects based on various EU countries. We tried to choose countries that we had connection to in the class, such as girls in the class who were born in these countries, or girls who had family members living in certain countries. Have a look at some of our projects:

Have a listen!

Here we are singing a round of the three songs 'Swing Low Sweet Chariot', 'I wanna sing' and 'When the Saints go Marching In'. Each group had to sing their own piece whilst trying not to be distracted by the other two groups which was really difficult, but we think we did a good job! Have a listen here:
